one word 2013: celebrate.
Celebrate came to me in the middle of November, actually. I’ve been thinking about the word for awhile, and the more I think about it, the more I realize how much I need it . . . and how much we need it. Connect was my one word for 2012. And celebrate will be my … Continue reading »
repeat the sounding joy.
Christmas Day can feel like the end of a laborious race. It can feel bittersweet, with an underlying sense of all-isn’t-calm, all-isn’t-bright. What I have learned this Advent is that Christmas isn’t joy to the world in spite of the mess. Rather, Christmas is joy to the world because of the mess. Because God sent … Continue reading »
what my printer taught me about problem-solving
My inkjet printer: this big, bloated machine sometimes worked and sometimes it didn’t. Sometimes, it printed on command, flawlessly. Usually, it required bizarre coaxing and convincing. Opening and closing the ink cartridge area sometimes did it. Opening and closing the scanner portion sometimes helped. And every once in awhile, removing and reloading the paper helped. … Continue reading »
wedded wednesday: loving well today.
This grad school stuff has been quite a journey. Quick summary: despite Mr. S.’s new position and our move to Kansas City, he was still enrolled and wrapping up the thesis remotely. So the week after Thanksgiving, we made a whirlwind trip to Indiana for his master’s defense. Nine hours there, nine hours back. Two full … Continue reading »
inspiration-driven kitchen: how to start meal planning (part one)
Many great inventions occurred by accident. George Crum, a restaurant cook, sliced up potatoes as thinly as possible to serve to a customer displeased with the way his potatoes were cooked. As a result? The world’s first potato chip. The same goes for Post-It notes. The adhesive was too weak for the original purpose, but … Continue reading »
how to be generous (with a big chocolate bar)
Mr. S. had a brilliant trick-or-treating-related idea a few days before Halloween. We should buy a massive, king-size candy bar, he suggested, to give to our 100th trick-or-treater. Big candy bars? I’m always in. Big chocolate takes no convincing. Firmly planted in a neighborhood, and no longer apartment-dwellers, we had no idea how many little … Continue reading »
how Influence strengthened my mind (part one)
One week ago yesterday, I blogged in advance of Influence and said I felt a bit like Polly Pocket among Barbies. The founders of Influence reminded us early and often that insecurities and egos and attitudes weren’t welcome and should be checked at the door. And anxiety, despite the biggest and boldest shoo-ings, still shows … Continue reading »
five minute friday: focus (notes on a move)
FOCUS. So I’m leaving Lafayette today. Really, in about half an hour. To focus is to keep our eyes on the goal, blinders up. For the first time in my life, a transition feels peaceful. Unlike my move from Kansas City to Lafayette, I’ve tied up loose ends as best as I can. And what … Continue reading »
five minute friday: Connect.
Connect. Oh, it’s been a precious word to me, so precious. I chose it in early January 2012 as my word for the year, and so it’s with mixed feelings that I look back, sitting here in August, at the year so far. Connect . . . connection . . . connected. This year has … Continue reading »
